CHRISTMAS GREETINGS 2009 -  True North Outposts & Cabins

Dear Friends,

A little to note from our frozen part of the country, and frozen it is.  Officially December 8th, Clearwater Lake froze, from one end of the lake to the other.  The south end (in front of True North - up as far as the first island north) froze between sun down Dec. 4th and sun up Dec. 5th.  From Dec. 4th - Dec. 15th we experienced "wicked" cold temperatures, which has been remarkable to make ice, good blue ice, quickly.  Grandpa Bill went to his cabin today (Dec. 17th) on his snow mobile, to check his cabin and to measure the ice, 7 inches was the least amount of ice that he found.  Winter is here!

For the better part of summer season, we had less than desireable weather conditions.  Certainly NOT weather we have grown accustomed to thinking as "summer" weather.  It was dismal at best.  Unseasonably cool, wet, what I happen to think of as "crap-o-la" weather.  In July, I think I must have had a bleak outlook as my Dad presented me with a little sign that read " Life isn't about waiting for the Storm to Pass...It's about learning to Dance in the Rain".  Dad hit the nail on the head.  I placed that sign where I could read it on a regular basis and worked hard to develop a better attitude.  September arrived and so did Summer and we were gifted with the best stretch of weather  - all season.

Fish and fishing patterns this season, were much like the weather, arriving later.  Traditionally known and proven fishing holes, were a disappointment for some.  The combination of extremes created some hard work and creativity.  Fishing can be a real job sometimes!  Many beautiful fish were caught and released again this season - and a good number of shore lunches or fish dinners were experienced.  Nothing beats that freshest ever, fish dinner!  The Butts boys were back on dock duty again this season, fishing for Crayfish.  Dave and Derek have quite a little system for catching Crayfish - and have convinced  their Mom (Diane) to boil up the Crayfish.  The Thomson family shortly after arrival, required doorknob adjustments  on their cabin - immediately they were locked in.  Once they could access IN and OUT, they managed to get down on the front dock, wasting little time and caught the first ever (that we are aware of) Crappie - off the front dock.  Thomson's dog Roo, provided us with some great canine entertainment - Roo rides on the tube behind the boat, jumped off "The Rock" with the rest of the the family and spent as much time in the water as the kids.  The Shultz family visited again this season - unbeknownst to us, they have had a family tradition, a competition, while on their outpost outings - The Whiskey Jack Contest.  We were introduced to the format, rules and regulations - and it still makes us smile.  Thanks for sharing with us!  Everyday of our season there are highlights - we can only thank YOU for choosing True North, sharing a bit of your time, tales and friendship, with us.  We are forever greatful!

Mosbeck Family Scoop ~ Dallas and Cody are in their Sr. year at Gustavus Adolphus College.  Both boys are on target for graduation, May 30, 2010.  Both boys are playing hockey: Dallas with the JV team, Cody Varsity.  Both boys are Captains for their teams.  Both boys have part-time student jobs at GAC, in the Lund Center (the Lund houses most all the athletic facilites of the school as well as the arena) Dallas sharpens skates and travels w/ the varsity team at times, Cody works at the Arena.  Both boys are living at the "Bellagio"  again this year.  Both boys were not home this past Summer; they had new job experiences in the Twin City area.  Both boys were missed here at home.  Both boys are doing pretty darn well, as far as Mom and Dad are concerned ~ combined w/ as far as we know.  We are very proud of them!

Miss Nicki, completed her High School days mid June.  To commence her commencement, we celebrated in Olympic style.  We inclued our guests in camp, added family, neighbors and close friends, as fate would have it - one of the nicest days of Summer was to be enjoyed that day.  Competition was fierce, games, cheaters and bribers were all present, giggles and smiles, a heck of a good celebration!  As of yet, Nicki has not nailed down her next chapter, she has done a couple campus visits and we have no doubt in her ability to figure out "her plan", all in good time.  She worked 5 weeks of summer hockey camp this past summer/fall, then she landed a part time job at the Emo Drug Store.  She seems to enjoy retail and is learning daily.  Nicki has found her way to the arena - one night a week she assists w/ on ice instruction for a girls youth hockey program.  She is keeping busy.  With Nicki being away the last two years of high school, we are enjoying having her home!

Chuck and I have been busy - although I can't exactly say with waht.  This past year has taken us to numerous hockey games, from Calgary, Alberta to Lake Placid, New York and other venues in between.  We enjoy the game and it's been a great pleasure to share in our children's passions and experiences.  Chuck spent a number of weeks flying the remote north this past year.  The remote flying experience has been a two-fold deal, financially required as well as a successful adventure.  The communities that Chuck provides his air service to are unique, both the people and the location and Chuck has a keen rapport with the people.  Needless to say, we have been blessed with another great year of experiences and opportunity.

Last week I gazed out the window at the right time, twice.  In the morning I happened to view the first crossing of deer (this was just shortly after the ice had formed on the lake).  Later the same day, a wolf pack of 5, crossed the ice at the same crossing spot that I had witnessed the deer, earlier.  Chuck and I in the past few years have sighted the occasional wolf, but not a wolf pack.  Nicki was home at the time and was able to view the wolves too.  I might also mention - that with the absence of Ruger, we feel that we may see more wildlife this year.  Ole Ruger did his job while with us.  He kept the wildlife pushed back from home.  Unfortunately, Ruger was put to rest the end of October.

Jay and Janene and family are all doing well - Cameron and Teagan are keeping them very busy.  Scott and Michelle, Austin and Jack welcomed a new baby daughter/sister to their family, Kate Armine.  She's beautiful!  Lauren is in her second year of University and doing mighty fine, home here shortly for Christmas break.  Armin, Bill, Barbara, Tom and Silvia are all doing pretty darn good.  We are thankful to have our family active in our lives!

From our family to each of you and your families, we wish you a very Merry Christmas & Best Wishes in 2010!  Until we see you again, God Bless.

The Mosbecks,

Chuck, Cathy, Dallas, Cody and Nicki

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

We hope that you will all take a few moments and truly give thanks for
all the gifts in your life.  On our personal list, we give thanks for our
family, their health, their love and support, our children - and all of the
opportunities they have been gifted & the joys they have brought, for
wonderful friends and guests, which give us purpose, to live in peace and the
freedom to do so.  Yes, the Mosbeck Family has much to be thankful for
this Thanksgiving and we send our thoughts to each of you.

If you have arrived at this newsletter location via postcard poke, e-mail
prompt or randomly, Welcome.  We hope you are here for a
"fitting" (a fitting of the boots in the above photo).  We can
see YOU in these boots in 2010!

Thank you Felix Lanier for the use of your photo. Taken at Snelgrove Lake a
few years ago.  It is peculiar how a picture will grab you and this
picture did so, for me (Cathy).  As most of you know, I am NOT a fisherman.
OH, I enjoy it, the picture depicts what I enjoy most, being out in the boat,
surrounded by our country's bountiful beauty, good companionship (and someone
who knows where to go to fish, I can drive the boat - have difficulty with the
honey holes) relaxing, fresh air .... The peacefulness of it all.  To "catch"
is a bonus and rarely does the fish outdo us!  Now, I realize, many of you
are more serious, better skilled and have a bigger addiction to the sport than
myself, we are thankful for that!  The photo is great and perhaps it will
refresh your memory of vacation times and maybe prompt you to keep True North as a consideration for 2010.

We have a couple of quick mentionables:

Rates for 2010 are available on line, updated and yes, a slight
increase.  We were hoping  to freeze our '09 rates.  The Gov't, in their
infinite wisdom, has announced a harmonized tax rate to be imposed in 2010,
hence the increase.

Our Christmas letter will be posted in early December, right here on our
newsletter page of our website.  Please revisit the site.

The top priority of our "to-do" list is web page revisions.
We are doing photo updates.  If you have pictures that you would be
willing to share & have posted on our website, please e-mail them to us and
we will get them up.  Please check back periodically  and “surf” our site!

Dallas and Cody are enroute home, as I write this note.  A nice
5-day Thanksgiving break for the boys.  We are fortunate that they are
close enough to make the journey.  The Mosbeck men have their agenda
planned, it includes hunting, with Grandpa, Uncle, Cousins and Dad and relaxing, I
will take a guess that they will get some much-needed rest as well.
Nicki, Chuck and I are delighted to have a full house, again.

Again,  Thanksgiving Blessings to you all.

~The Mosbeck Family~
